I don’t know if you have noticed that there are a lot of
angry people shouting and yelling about one thing or the other; most are angry
because things are not going the way they expect, so they lash out at those
they feel are stopping them from getting their desired results. This has given rise to a large
dose of apathy in the air: So many want their views respected without a care for their opponents opinions or feelings. One can understand this attitude with the
world as it is the way of the devil, but when this trait is exhibited in the
Church, it calls for concern. It is a terrible spirit and the door through
which it came in must be shut in Jesus Christ name.
The Bible tells us: “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for
brethren to dwell together in unity” (Psalm 133:1). Please note the word ‘unity’,
it is not ‘uniformity’. Even if we have different methods (as dictated by God’s
word), our goal is and must be to reign with Jesus Christ at the end of our
race here on earth. This goal brings us together, though diverse, but as one! This
truth is what sets us free from the errors, deceit and falsehood of darkness. It
is then wrong and dangerous to the unity of our faith to see brothers
castigating brothers, especially in the social media, without the accusing
party asking the Holy Spirit if the position being pushed forward is the Lord’s
will. They claim to have a prerogative of understanding and knowing God better
than their brothers (please read 2 Chronicles 35:20-23). This group believes
that everything can be resolved through the use of commonsense or by the
standard of what men collectively call good and right without any Scriptural
backing. Thus, forgetting what the Lord said concerning such ‘orderly’ thinking:
“Then He said to them, ‘You like to
appear righteous in public, but God knows your heart. What this world honors is
detestable in the sight of God’” (Luke 16:15, NLT). The end result is anger
for those that do not agree with our position!
This spirit is a divisive one
and we must stand against it to resist it. We must not allow its agents to
bully us into accepting their false teachings. It doesn’t matter how high sounding
the teachings may be, if they do not have Scriptural backing, they must be
discarded as they draw attention to self and not to God. For instance, so many
do not want any sound teaching that draw attention to their state in relation
to eternity. These believe they can live the lives they want on their own terms
and still believe they are on their merry way to Heaven! All such want to hear
is how they can increase and enjoy good lives to the ‘glory of God’ whilst living
their old lives. Pray tell, how can one achieve that without Jesus Christ?
Except they are talking about a false Christ! In the same vein many Churches
and teachers of God’s word try to explain God’s word without God especially
when it touches on ‘sensitive’ issues like sin, thus losing the message
altogether. When this is pointed out in love, they resort to anger. This is not
right. We should not only correct in love, we must equally humbly listen,
return to God to see if we are right in our position, if not, we are to repent
of it: “Therefore, all who are mature
should think this way. And if you think differently about anything, God will
reveal this to you also. In any case, we should live up to whatever truth we
have attained” (Philippians 3:15-16).
Friend, don't succumb to spiritual bullying by teachers that want to push their position of error down your throat. The teaching on liberty,
increase and prosperity in the Scriptures is not a license to walk and live in nonsense;
it is a call to live in holiness and righteousness. As congregants, you have no
excuse to live and walk in ignorance of God’s will. It is your responsibility
to search out God’s word for yourself and apply same to your life: “Be careful that no one takes you captive
through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition, based on the
elemental forces of the world, and not based on Christ” (Colossians 2:8). Let's kick out this spirit from our midst whenever we come across it by shining the light of God's truth and love. May
the light of God’s word fill your heart and enable you to see the errors of the
world and to run from them in Jesus Christ name. God bless you.
