We live in a very materialistic world that equates a man’s
worth with what he has or has the ability to have. Life incidentally is much
more than all of these. As sons of God, our allegiance to God, or the weight of
our service should not be based on what we had acquired or could. The world
teaches that a man that has not acquired some form of wealth should not be
reckoned with. As a result, many believe that they have no credibility if their
bank account is not fat. Some go as far as believing that the reason people
disrespect them is because of their lack of affluence and influence. However, most of us
understand that the Bible has told us that the worth of a man is not based on
the size of his wealth, yet, we believe otherwise. Thus, many teachings from
pulpits are geared towards us getting as much as we can through strategies, hard
work and many other parameters.
Sadly, many wonderful sons of God believe that
the mark of a man that is blessed is his worth materially. Thus, when they do
not have these, they become depressed and begin to drift from the Presence of
God! Beloved, allow me under God to call your heart back. When Moses died, God
announced to Joshua: “Moses My servant is
dead…No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live. I will be
with you, just as I was with Moses. I will not leave you or forsake you”
(Joshua 1:2a, 5). Then the Lord gave him an instruction that will make the
promise a reality in his life: “Above
all, be strong and very courageous to carefully observe the whole instruction
My servant Moses commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right or the left,
so that you will have success wherever you go. This book of instruction must
not depart from your mouth, you are to recite it day and night, so that you may
carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and
succeed in whatever you do” (Joshua 1: 7-8). Joshua followed this
instruction and the verdict was: “On that
day the Lord exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel, and they revered him
throughout his life, as they had revered Moses” (Joshua 4:14). All Joshua
did was to obey the instruction he was given in Chapter 1:6-9, and the Lord held
up His end of the covenant. Joshua made his way prosperous and good success
dogged his steps. It was not based on his strength but his obedience!
Today,
sadly, we are told the way to success is based on our abilities and capabilities.
If this was so, then God need not watch over us! But He had promised us, as we
go for Him: “…And remember, I am with you
always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20b). Beloved, everything you need and require for success, and the good one at that, is
in Jesus Christ. All He asks of us is to obey and meditate upon His Word; to be
CAREFUL TO DO ALL THAT IS WRITTEN. When we do this, we make it possible for Him
to make our way prosperous and our steps dogged with success. I say ‘make it
possible’ because it is a two way street. We cannot claim the promises of God
if we would not obey the instructions attached! If Joshua had not obeyed, he
would not have had the respect and reverence of the people. It was not his
prosperity that gave him their respect or reverence, God did! If Peter had not
listened to the instructions of Jesus that was not a fisherman, but relied on
his own acquired ability and capability as a fisherman of many years, he would
not have caught the amount of fish he did on both occasions he had clear
instructions to cast his net.
The Bible tells us: “Remember the Lord your God. He is the One who gives you power to be
successful, in order to fulfill the covenant He confirmed to your ancestors
with an oath” (Deuteronomy 8:18, NLT). This means the success you have or
will have in whatever area of your life is not a product of your power or abilities,
but God gives and teaches you how to be. Do not let the world hoodwink you into
its vain philosophies (Colossians 2:8), but hold on to God’s clear Word and
your way will indeed be successful and prosperous to the glory of God Almighty!
Therefore, if there is a prayer verse that must constantly be on our lips in
this world as we await the Lord Jesus Christ, it is, Lord, “Turn my eyes from looking at what is worthless; give me life in Your
ways” (Psalm 119:37), in Jesus Christ name. God bless you.
A timely message!
