When a land is left to itself, it becomes a haunt for every animal including dangerous reptiles. On such a land you would find stones, sharp rocks and vegetation that is not fit for human consumption. Anything can come into that land to violate or desecrate it because it is no man’s land: anything goes! Our hearts are likened to lands and if we allow it to lie fallow it is not different from the description of the ‘no man’s land’ above. As children of God we cannot afford to allow our hearts to lie fallow (uncultivated, dead state to the Word of God); a heart that is no longer moved or prodded by the Word of God. In such a state it becomes a struggle to follow or obey the Lord; the things of God become uninteresting. This is not a time to leave your heart fallow by allowing anything to come in and go. Very soon it will harbor thoughts and imaginations that are inimical to your confession and growth in the Lord. Why is God particular about the state of our hearts at this time? It is because we have entered very dangerous times that were spoken of in 2Timothy 3:1-5: a time of stress, where men are self-centered and portray a form of godliness; a time that will be difficult to discern between the truth and the half truths of the enemy. Unfortunately, so many children of God at this time ignorantly worship the ‘idea’ of God rather than God Himself. Friend, this is the time when on a daily basis we must make conscious efforts to separate ourselves from all contaminating influences. There are some things that had been allowed to run free in our hearts and the repercussions are now hard to bear. What then do we sow? On a daily basis we are expected to sow righteousness, this will in turn transform our minds/hearts to that of Christ’s. The time of sowing is now! It does not matter what your age or experience is, as long as you are alive, there is a sowing and reaping taking place. This is an age-long principle of the Lord: “As long as the earth endures, seed-time and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter and night and day will not cease.” Gen 8:22. Friend there is a need to begin or continue sowing good seeds and allowing only good seeds to be sown in you. As the coming of Christ draws ever nearer, so many evil seeds are flying in the air; we must consciously and consistently disallow them from landing in our hearts. Peradventure they have, we must uproot them before they contaminate the whole heart: remember, "a little yeast leavens the whole lump of dough" Gal 5:9. The only way to guard against this successfully is to steadily pursue righteousness which is a state of being right with God in thoughts, words and actions. The Bible clearly states in Hosea 10:12 – “Sow righteousness for yourselves and reap faithful love; break up your fallow ground. It is time to seek the Lord until He comes and sends righteousness on you like the rain.” But it doesn’t stop there! As soon as God’s righteousness is planted in us, the devil seeks to uproot this privilege in our lives by any means possible! Mark 4:19 says, “But the worries of this age, the seduction of wealth and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word and it becomes unfruitful”. We must guard our hearts above all with all diligence to enter into the next verse which says, “but the ones sown on good ground are those who hear the word, welcome it and produce a crop 30, 60 and 100 times what was sown." Do not take life and the state of your heart for granted; continue to cultivate it and as you do your life will be a blessing to your generation. God bless you!
Have you ever visited a quarry site and considered the process the rocks are subjected to before they become dressed stones to be used? If the stones could talk they will have a story to tell about their experiences. As children of God we go through diverse experiences and we wonder if we will indeed survive them. Sometimes we wonder why our gracious and compassionate Father would allow such to befall us considering who we are in Him and what we are doing in His vineyard. The Scripture that should readily come to our minds in such circumstances is God’s assurance when He said: “I will be with you when you pass through the waters, and when you pass through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. You will not be scorched when you walk through the fire and the flame will not burn you ” (Isaiah 43:2). This Scripture assures us that through the experiences of flames and waters, God is always by our side to see us through. Thus, it is necessary for us to go through the...
